Club Information

Crusheen GAA Club was founded on the 2nd January 1887. The inaugural meeting was held in the Irish National League room in the upstairs of Mary O’Grady’s public house (now Clarke’s Highway Inn). During its first fifty years the club had more of a political than sporting focus and did not win its first championship until 1934.

The parish population was in continuous decline from post famine times with a decline of 70% between 1841 and 1911 and a further decline of over 50% from 1548 in 1911 to a low of 717 in 1996. Since 2001 the decline has been reversed and with almost 600 new incomers to the parish the local school roll book at 150 currently is at its highest in decades.

In 2010 Crusheen won the Senior Championship for the first time in its history, defeating Cratloe in the final. The Canon Hamilton Cup was retained in 2011 when Sixmilebridge were defeated on a wet October day. The club went on to reach the Munster Club final that year only to suffer defeat to Na Piarsaigh from Limerick in a replay. Crusheen’s most recent appearance in a County Final was 2023.

Like most small rural clubs declining numbers at underage levels has resulted in the club joining with Tubber for underage competitions. This has proven particularly successful in recent years with the amalgamation teams winning titles at various grades including the u21B title in 2021.

The GAA has been a strong and unifying force within the community over the years, helping the development of community spirit, providing excellent facilities and acting as a gateway to the community for newcomers to the parish. The achievements of the club at underage levels together with the blend of youth and experience playing today will hopefully lead to further Senior success in the future.
