FRIENDS & SUPPORTERS of CLARE GAA Patron: Dan McInerney, President: Jimmy Smyth, Chairman: Christy Killeen, Vice Chairman: Sean O Laoire. Secretary: Pat Nihill, Treasurer: Anne Greene, P.R.O.: Myles Clancy. The past year has marked the 21st anniversary of our foundation, during which time over €400k will have been contributed to C.L.G. Coiste Chontae An Chláir. During the year we have continued with our fundraising work to support Clare County Board in the promotion and development of hurling and football at underage level. Our work is strongly acknowledged by followers of sport in Clare and particularly by the officers and club representatives of the County Board. This is evidenced by their attendance at our AGM, participation at our golf events and by the special location provided to us in the Clare GAA official web-site. We invite you to visit us on this site (www.claregaa.ie) where you will find all the information about our activity. It is frequently mentioned that the true value of our work for the youth of Clare is immeasurable, and we stand indebted to all who support us in entering golf teams and through other sponsorship. Aside from the financial aspect many consider that our existence in the Capital gives an added dimension to the GAA in Clare and becomes a source of encouragement from without. The main part of our fundraising is a well established Golf Classic held annually in the beautiful setting of Newlands Golf Club. Our main sponsor for this event is Sean Hegarty (Hegarty Demolition Ltd). I would ask you to make a special note of our next event which will be held in Newlands on Thursday 17th May 2012. You will be most welcome to organise and enter a team of 4 golfers and/or sponsor a Tee Box. Our 21st Golf Classic was held on the 2nd June 2011, and despite the general economic decline a reasonably good ‘turn out’ of 31 teams resulted on the day. Due to our policy of keeping team and sponsorship charges as low as possible the resultant revenue in the current climate tends to fall below our expectations. Overall, it once again proved to be a worthwhile event and together with the social aspect, good weather and a beautifully presented golf course all participants had a very enjoyable day. ( See results below) Our Captain for the past year was Jackie Greene, former great Clare and Munster hurler. Jackie has supported us in every possible way since our inception and was a popular and worthy Captain for the year. We salute the Clare Intermediate hurling team on its All-Ireland success in 2001, led by captain Tony Carmody. The commencement of a new year brings with it a new dawn and we look towards achieving further support to the efforts and achievements of Clare GAA in 2012. We are always anxious that new people would join up with us in committee, as sponsors, or supporters in any way – just contact me at killeec@iol.ie or 0872581228. The recent AGM of Friends & Supporters of Clare GAA decided to hold its 21st Golf Classic in Newlands G.C. on Thursday 2nd June 2011. Having regard for the present difficult economic times the team entry fee has been reduced by 42% to €400, to include green fees, meals and prizes. Over the past 21 years since our foundation a large number of participants have enjoyed our outings and to them we are sincerely grateful for supporting us. Last year we subscribed €3,000 to the training fund of the Clare Minor Hurlers and a further €10,000 was contributed to Clare Co. Board for disbursement to underage football and hurling. The Clare County Board greatly acknowledge our existence not alone from a finance viewpoint but also, importantly, from a social and support perspective. This is evidenced by the presence of a County Board team at our outing, having us as guests at their functions, games and presentations, and facilitating us with our special page on their official web-site. This year we are asking for a special effort to get teams and sponsorships to partake in this, our 21st outing, and to enjoy another eventful day at Newlands G.C. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Presentation to Clare Co Board During the past year we have continued with our fundraising work to support Clare County Board in the promotion and development of hurling and football at underage level. We are about to enter our 21st year in this work at the end of which close on half a million Euros will have been contributed. The true value of this to the youth of Clare is immeasurable, and we stand indebted to all who support us. The main part of our fundraising is a well established Golf Classic held annually in the beautiful setting of Newlands Golf Club. Our main sponsor for this event is Sean Hegarty (Hegarty Demolition Ltd). Fiona Killeen at Registratioin desk with Captain P J O'Connor. Pat O'Donnell in touch with trophies. Our 20th Golf Classic was held on the 3rd June 2010, and despite the general economic decline a reasonably good ‘turn out’ resulted on the day. Notwithstanding that revenue fell below our expectations, it nevertheless proved a worthwhile event and together with the social aspect, good weather and a beautifully presented golf course all participants had a very enjoyable day. Our Captain for the past year was that indestructible Ruan man, P. J. O’Connor. Those of you who know him, or indeed who may have ‘heard’ him, will realise the level of energy that he brings to bear on whatever cause he supports. Go maire tú an céad. Victories on the playing field can be scarce enough at times but we were proud to have three special Cups/Trophies on display at Newlands. These were hard won by Clare’s Kilmurry-Ibrickane football club, and our U21 county hurlers. We were proud to contribute financially to some of the costs involved in the preparation of this team going forward. Maybe in some way or another we contribute in our work to bring about the kind of performance improvements needed in an ever increasing competitive arena. The Competition prize winners at Newlands were: 1st: Clare Civil Engineering (90): Andrew Whelan, Niall Kerins, Francis Mangan, Brian Cullitan 2nd: Pat O’Donnell & Co. (88): Pat O’Donnell, Eoin O’Donnell, Aidan O’Dea, Eugene Garrihy. 3rd: Option Finance (87): Des Hanrahan, Ronan Killeen, Enda Buckley, Christy Killeen 4th: P J O’Connor & Son (86): P J O’Connor, John O’Neill, Séan O’Connor, Matthew O’Connor 5th: Axa Insurance (86): John Killeen, Dermot Devlin, Aidan Waters, Padraic McNicholes Longest Drive: Padraic McNicholes Nearest the Pin: John Killeen Winner, Andrew Whelan with P J O'Connor, Captain Michael O'Neill, Chairman, Clare County Board with P J O'Connor. The Committee expresses its sincere gratitude to teams, sponsors, and to all who helped on the day. Details of our next event – our special 21st Annual Golf Classic - are shown hereunder and for this we ask for your participation and support in whatever way possible. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
