Divisional Structure – Step 1

Every year our county minors play in the Munster championship where they try and bridge the 5 year development gap between the Cork and Kerry player with 5 months preparation. Along with the West & North Clare college amalgamations in the Munster schools A competitions another new project to aid the development our underage club players is a six Division championship at U15 (for 13 & 14 yr olds) and U17 (for 15, 16 & 17 yr olds).

The county has been divided into 6 divisions similar to those in Kerry and these divisions will compete against each with the propose of exposing the clubs players within those divisions to a higher level of training/coaching/games over a 6 week period in Oct/Nov each year. This is STEP 1 of the 4 step pathway for all players to advance to Development squad tournament panel.

The six divisions are shown below

Corca Baiscinn, Cill Cheather, An Tuisceart, Estuary Gaels, Inis Faughs, Boru

The clubs in each division have accepted the divisional concept as a way of strengthening and raising the profile of football while also developing all their underage players and to cement the relationship between clubs a divisional committee was setup consisting of a representative from each club.

The first item for each committee was to agree a divisional name, colour and crest to represent themselves in future. The divisional format will also be used for coach education and workshops.

Below is the fixture schedule and scores of the U15 Divisional Championship ran in 2010

 Regional Squads –Step 2

January saw the start of our regional U14 and U15 squads in preparation for our County U14 and U15 development squads. This Step 2 of our 4 Step pathway for club players to advance and improve their playing standards as they try and achieve the honour of representing their county at the Munster football tournaments.

In the format for the Regional squads we amalgamate 2 divisions from the U15 divisional championship and create regional squads at U14 and U15. Therefore go from 6 divisions into 3 regions and this has the effect of creating more competitive squads and games to expose club players with each region had 5 training sessions and two games against the other regions.

The squads received coaching from some of the best coaches in the county including sessions taken by county players. The added incentive for each region was the opportunity for the winning region to travel to Moyvane in March to play the North Kerry U14 and U15 academy squads.

The South/West regional squad made of players from the Corca Baiscinn and Estuary Gaels division were victorious in the U14 grade while the Mid/North squads consisting of players from the An Tuisceart and Cill Cheathar were the U15 victors.

This is STEP 2 of the 4 step pathway for all players to advance to Development squad tournament panel.

Munster Council 1st Year Coaching Project

The Munster Council/County board 1st year project is in its 2nd year and it ultimate aim is to have a stronger Munster Senior Championship through improving the playing standards in Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick and Clare. It was decided the best way to achieve this goal was through the colleges in each of the counties because up to 2010 St Flannan’s Ennis were the only school outside of Cork and Kerry that competed at Munster colleges A level.

So a four year project was agreed were 3 schools from each county were selected to receive 24 weeks outside coaching and blitzes for their 1st year players with the aim that some of these schools would capable of entering Munster A colleges competitions.

In Clare the 3 schools selected were Rice College Ennis, West Clare colleges amalgamation (Kilkee, Kilrush, Kilmihil, Kildysart) and North Clare colleges (Spanish Pt, Ennistymon CBS, Ennistymon Vocational, Lisdoonvarna). The West and North amalgamations because individually these schools could never hope to compete at A on their own and so for 12 Sundays before and 12 Sundays after Christmas the 1st year players from ach school train together in Cooraclare/Killimer in West and Lahinch in the North. As it is the second year of the project the 2nd years are kept together and continue on the previous years work.

This project has been a huge success for all involved but especially in raising the profile of both Gaelic football and most important of all the Player

The coaches responsible for the coaching the past two years along with the teachers of each school are

West – Ger Keane year 1 and James Murrihy year 2

North – Aidan O Keeffe

Rice – Michael Considine year 1 and Lawrence Healy year 2

February 2011

Development Squads

In February we had Step 3 of the 4 Step development pathway for our club players with each step aimed at challenging players abilities and increasing their profile by achieving selection for the next level.

Here we select two development squads each at U14 and U15 from players showing promise from those that were selected to take part in our 3 regional squads in January. So we select Atlantic and Boru development squads for both grades which giving us a wide base of 48 players that we will carry into 2012 and with the Atlantic representing players selected from 3 divisions from the west ( Corca Baiscinn, Cill Cheathar and An Tuisceart ) and Boru representing the other 3 divisions ( Estuary Gaels, Inis Faughs, Boru ) we have players across the whole county involved.

These development squads had 3 weeks of training and play two games against each other before they break for the U16 club championship. However the work done in January and February through regional and development squads will give the squads a head start when they come together again in June for their preparation for the Munster tournaments in July.

U14 Management – Matt O Connor Wolf Tones, Martin Brennan Clondegad, David O Connell Sh Gaels, Martin Downes Naomh Eoin
