Camogie stars rewarded for top performances

Eight of the country’s top camogie stars were honoured at a gala lunch at Croke Park Hotel, this afternoon (Monday, November 22nd) for their impressive displays throughout the Gala Senior Camogie Championship.

Wexford’s All Ireland winning duo, Mary Leacy and team mate Aoife O’Connor along with Galway star Brenda Hanney were among the recipients.

In association with the Irish Daily Star and Gala, players were chosen for their top class displays during the championship. 

Galway, this year’s All Ireland finalists picked up three awards with wing forward Brenda Hanney, sharpshooter Aislinn Connolly and wing- back Regina Glynn all selected. Cork trio, Gemma O’Connor, Jennifer O’Leary and Anna Geary (a double recipient) were also feted at the award winning lunch.

Wexford’s Mary Leacy, collected on the double for her performances against Tipperary and in the All Ireland semi-final win over Kilkenny with wing back Aoife O’Connor also rewarded for her display against the Cats, during the round robin stages of the championship. 

Speaking about the awards President of the Camogie Association Joan O’Flynn:

“The Camogie Association would like to congratulate all of this year’s recipients who were noteworthy for their fantastic displays during an extremely exciting championship. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Gala, our championship sponsors, whose commitment to the association, is reflected in yet another great initiative. And finally, to the Irish Daily Star we are very thankful for their strong and consistent coverage of camogie. As an association we are constantly striving to increase our profile and naturally we rely upon the media for this. The Irish Daily Star have been excellent throughout this season in support of our goal.”

Each of these players demonstrated an outstanding commitment to their team, and gave award-winning performances on the pitch. It's their individual contribution that we are celebrating today, highlighting the breadth of skill in the Gala All-Ireland Camogie Championships.”


Eoin Brannigan, Sports Editor of the Irish Daily Star paid tribute to all of the recipients:

“We are delighted to be involved with the Camogie Association and Gala and to reward the displays of the country’s top inter-county players throughout the season. Congratulations to all involved, it is a fantastic achievement to be chosen for this award.”

       The Irish Daily Star/Gala Performance Award commenced on June 12th to August 14th.During this time a player of the match was from a selected game in seven rounds of the senior championship and the All Ireland semi-finals with coverage in the Irish Daily Star each Monday.

       This is the Inaugural year of the Irish Daily Star/Gala Performance Award scheme.

       Galway trio Brenda Hanney, Aislinn Connolly and Regina Glynn were also chosen as 2010 Camogie Association All Stars as was Cork wing back Anna Geary and Wexford centre back Mary Leacy.

       The recipients are as follows:

Anna Geary (Cork) v Kilkenny on June 19th

Aislinn Connolly (Galway) v Wexford on June 26th

Brenda Hanney (Galway) v Cork on July 3rd

Mary Leacy (Wexford) v Tipperary on July 10th

Anna Geary (Cork) v Wexford on July 17th

Aoife O’Connor (Wexford) v Kilkenny on July 24th

Mary Leacy (Wexford) v Kilkenny on August 14th

Jennifer O’Leary (Cork) v Galway on August 14th

Regina Glynn (Galway) v Cork on August 14th (All Ireland Semi-final replay)
